How to choose a karaoke machine for kids
Size, mic count, volume and battery: the four things that decide whether a kids' karaoke machine gets used every day or forgotten in a cupboard.

The short version
- Small beats big: a lunchbox-sized speaker goes everywhere a child goes
- Count the singers, then count the mics
- Look for stepped volume you control
- 4 hours of battery is the minimum for a party
Start with size
A karaoke machine that lives in a cupboard is not a karaoke machine. The sets kids use every day are small enough to carry from bedroom to car to grandma's house. Ours are about the size of a lunchbox, with a strap on top.
Count the singers
One child who likes to sing alone needs one mic. Siblings need two. Parties, cousins and classrooms need four. Buying too few mics is the single most common reason a karaoke gift ends in an argument.
Check the volume control
Kids' ears are more sensitive than ours. Look for stepped volume you set, not a dial that a child can spin to maximum. YLL minis use five steps; steps two and three are enough for most rooms.
Battery and charging
Four hours is the minimum for a birthday party. Our two-mic minis run 4 to 8 hours, and the character models 6 to 10. Rechargeable mics save a fortune in AA batteries.
Screen or no screen
Machines with built-in screens look impressive, but they pull kids back to staring at a display. A screen-free speaker keeps the phone as a jukebox and the child as the show.
